How do I maintain consistency without burning out?

There is a real beauty in living life as a routine, a meditative, zen-like series of practices. But let's be real. Life doesn't always afford us that luxury of time for self-care, especially if you have ambitious, unpredictable or erratic schedules at work and at home. Even if you make ample time, you can find yourself falling out of love with your self-care rituals, even becoming bored with them.

So how do you keep your well-intended goals in check without (a) abandoning them out of necessity or (b) burning out of them from boredom? Let's look at a few ways to keep them fresh.

One dozen balance boosters: checklist

1. Change the scenery

A simple switch in location can change your practice from one that feels samey to one that feels new every day. Instead of devoting one area of your home to exercise or quiet, find ways to take these habits with you.

  • If you meditate, find new quiet places you haven't sat in before. A new park bench every day. A different corner of your home.
  • If you journal, bring it with you and write at a new inspiring or convenient stop. Use locations as prompts or markers of progress.
  • Try a new sport or game that gets you towards your exercise goals in a similar amount of steps or BPMs. Playing is still exercise, and makes the time fly.
  • Take into account the time of day or the season you're in and lean into what makes it special for you. Colors, sounds, smells ... It all can add variety to your routine.

2. Actions & Activity | Exercise, Movement, Prevention

Have a few variations at the ready for your favorite key activities. They still utilize your favorite means and count towards your goals, but flex to fit your life. Create flexible ala carte options you can insert into your day.

  • Have several restorative, stress-management practices you can fit into your day. 5 minutes of deep breathing. 10 minutes of thinking about nothing. 30 minutes away from your screen. 45 minutes of a walk in nature.
  • Create workouts that cover a variety of effort levels. Shorter cardio bursts. Medium sized muscle training reps. Longer endurance sessions.
  • Keep a spare set of clothes, tools, gear for your healthy habits in your car, at your workplace or in your travels so you have the freedom to partake in it spontaneously if you like.
  • When you are at the mercy of your surroundings, avoid falling off the healthy-eating wagon by preparing a healthy snack in advance or even allow yourself an occasional cheat day.

3. Rest & Restore | Restoration, Sleep, and Stress Management

While your journey is uniquely yours , you are not on it alone.

  • Integrative wellness focuses equally on what IS working in your life. This does not mean ignoring challenges, but balancing them within a bigger lens. Include incremental steps you are making in your observations. Did your rest feel more restorative on nights after exercise? These are valuable insights for your practitioner and yourself.
  • Ask your integrative practitioner for help. They may have new strategies to fit your lifestyle. Share your goals and they may have resources where you can learn new approaches and techniques to fit them – suggestions and supplements that complement your wind-down routine, for example.
  • Like minded friends can mix up your vibe by inspiring accountability, momentum and variety. Just knowing that someone else is focused on the same goals (and is paying attention to your own) can give you that extra push when you might otherwise burn out. Sharing activities with someone else changes the experience and allows you to enhance a friend's journey as well.
  • Speak your goals out loud – not only to the people closest to you, but also to yourself. As the old maxim goes, your thoughts become words, your words become actions, your actions become your habits. Bring your goals out from your thoughts and into reality. Plant these thoughts a la post-it note in areas of your home where you might forget your true intentions.

It can be tempting to think that our lives get in the way of what we set out to do. But the truth is, your often busy, challenging and unpredictable life can be a gateway to making the path more interesting.
