Genetics and family history are often a part of health conversations. One thing that makes an integrative approach to wellness popular is that sees genetic factors and also sees beyond them. While genetics certainly play a role, they are still only a piece of the puzzle in your complete wellness picture.
Integrative is inclusive. In this approach, your practitioner and/or care team see beyond your DNA through a mix of conventional and complementary therapies, while honoring your health background and history. Because your body and mind are complex, interconnected systems, the decisions and choices you make also impact your overall health.
Your genes are not your destiny. If you think of your wellness journey as a map, genetic factors can act as breadcrumbs, sign posts or shortcuts along your path. Sometimes useful and sometimes having no bearing at all. It's because genetic tests often reveal probabilities rather than certainties.
A genetic test may show you have a higher likelihood of developing a certain condition – and having no genetic risk for a particular condition doesn't mean it can't happen.

Depending on who you consult and what health concerns you are focusing on, approximately 20%-30% of your overall health is determined by genetics. That means the vast majority — 70%-80% — of your wellness depends on environmental factors and lifestyle.
You have a significant amount of control – and it's all about choices. Nutrition, activities, stress management and your state of mind. The things you do, in the places you choose, with whom you choose. These many – seemingly small but ultimately powerful – decisions optimize your health, and none of them are outside of an integrative approach.
With the help of an integrative practitioner, you can create a tailored health approach that respects your personal, cultural, and socioeconomic point of view in ways that transcend genetics. And everyone, regardless of their genetic makeup, can benefit from practicing a holistic, integrative approach to health.
As you navigate your wellness journey, remember genetics and integrative wellness is not an either/or. Rather, genetics are one of many factors you take along with you on your path.
